Just when the isolation of the past 13 months seems utterly intolerable, Murphy, my HRA alum, is there. He meows loudly before staking claim to my keyboard. He looks directly at me and meows again. I am grateful he is my officemate. Murphy is like a magician, making the pandemic despair disappear in one fell swoop. At the beginning of quarantine, Murphy and I held desk negotiations to create an equitable work environment. Eventually, we reached a compromise, I got a bigger desk.
I think of all the animals who have been adopted into new, loving homes during the pandemic. Those dogs, cats, guinea pigs, bunnies, and even iguanas lift their guardians’ spirits as Murphy does mine. I think, too, of the animals waiting in HRA’s care. Before long, they too will become someone’s beloved companion.
In my role, as the Director of Humane Education, I hear from students who have found comfort with their animal companions. During these endless months of quarantine, I teamed up with foster families and co-workers to virtually introduce many kittens, guinea pigs, dogs, hamsters, and bunnies to students who do not live with pets. Even through computer screens animals spark joy.
I am participating in the 30-Day Challenge to honor my Murphy and all the animals, who like him began their journeys at HRA. Maybe you live with a companion animal who makes you feel similar; consider honoring your pet by donating today.
